In first grade we do a variety of hands-on activities in Science & Social Studies. In the Springtime we raise caterpillars and watch them hatch into butterflies. This Fall, we are going to be making Native American villages out of materials that we will be collecting in nature.
In language arts, we are working on different elements of stories; setting, characters, and important details. We are also working on making predictions, putting events in sequential order, summarizing.
In word study the students are split into 3 or 4 groups and work on different spelling features each week. Some spelling features include vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and blends (fl, bl, gl, gr, cl).
In math we are working hard on mastering out addition and subtraction facts as well as making patterns, adding 3 numbers, making and counting tallies and place value (ones and tens).
In Writers Workshop, we are diligently working on writing informational chapter books.
